By definition, a bolster pillow is a long narrow cushion or a pillow that is filled with a wide range of stuffing including cotton, fiber or down.  In most cases, it is used in the bedroom and serves the purpose of a head rest or a back support.  In other cases, it is used as a hug pillow depending on which country you visit.  Today, bolster pillows are now being used for decorative purposes as opposed to the functionalities previously mentioned.  People are now using them as part of their living room decor, because by adding different shapes to the throw pillows and accent pillows used, you create more interest in the living room space.

The design of bolster pillows vary depending on what your needs for decorating are.  In some cases, people use them with extra lengths of fabric at each end, which are then tied with a ribbon or lace to allow the pillow to look like a Tootsie Roll or other candy wrapped in paper.  Other people use embellishments like buttons or studs for more of a design effect.  In other cases, people just keep it simple by using soft and comfortable fabrics for the bolster pillow covers, considering that the pillows may still well be used in the living space for comfort as opposed to just design.

Depending on the material they are made from, your keep and care will vary.  However, bolster pillows are usually cared for in the same way as other decorative pillows.  Once you take the right approach to caring for them, you will find that they will hold up and maintain their attractiveness for a very long time.  Giving your pillows proper cleaning will also contribute to the outer fabric having lasting softness and smoothness.  Remember the feel is just as important as the appearance!
